Asutifi North District Assembly held 39th Farmers' Day Celebration

The 39th farmers’ day celebration was held at Donkorkrom in Kenyasi No.1 with the theme, “Delivering smart solutions for sustainable food security and resilience.’’

Delivering on the occasion, Mr. Paul Boakye, the District Director of Agriculture of Asutifi North said, the theme captures the urgency and importance of embracing innovative technologies and practices to address the challenges that farmers face daily and to build a sustainable future for generations to come.

The farmers’ day celebration serves as an Agricultural Extension Tool that helps in the adoption of good agricultural practices, draws farmers to the Agricultural Extension Agents, encourages farmers to strive to the top and above all gives recognition to the hard-working farmers, thereby increasing food production in the country, he added.

Mr. Ato Obeng, representative from Newmont Goldcorp Ghana said Agriculture remains an important sector in Ghana’s economy and Newmont Goldcorp acknowledges the hardworking farmers in the district and acknowledges the importance of agriculture in the economy.

Newmont has this year supported five municipalities and districts for the farmers’ day celebration with a total amount of GHC280, 000.

Asutifi North District was supported with wellington boots, boxes of cutlass, motor bikes, branded T-shirt, flat screen television, GTP and two motor kings which sum up to GHC 32,000 and a cash of GHC 96,000.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Asutifi North Patrick Barnor addressed the occasion by congratulating the President, Nana Akuffo Addo for always supporting farmers and His good intention of bringing back planting for Food and Job next year. He entreated the youth to engage themselves in farming because it is a very lucrative business.

Addressing the occasion, Mr Anthony Adjei Mensah, the DCE for Asutifi North said, the theme is indeed in line with the policy direction of the Government, which seeks for urgent need for everyone to go the extra mile to put adequate measures in place to reach and sustain food security.

The DCE praised the President of the Country for always supporting the district through agriculture.

Distribution of 59 bags of maize (hybrid) seeds to 379 beneficiary farmers, 113 bags of certified seed rice to 250 farmers, 86,000 palm seedlings and 11,500 coconut seedlings to farmers under the Tree Crop Development Project were made to farmers, he added.

Mr. Charles Owusu from Kenyasi No.1 was the third (3rd) District Best Farmer. He went home with a Motor Bike, NASCO TV Set, Radio Set, Cutlass, Key Soap, T-shirt, Cloth, Wellington Boots and a Spraying Machine.

Mr. Peter Issahaku from Amomaso who emerged the second (2nd) District Best Farmer was also given the prize; a Motor King, NASCO TV Set, Radio Set, Cutlass, Key Soap, T-shirt, Cloth, Wellington Boots and a Spraying Machine.

A 49year old Bright Kwasi Yeboah from Gambia No. 1 was adjudged the overall District Best Farmer. He was also honored with a Motor King in addition to NASCO TV Set, Radio Set, Cutlass, Key Soap, T-shirt, Cloth, Wallington Boots and a Spraying Machine. He thanked the organizers for making this possible and advised the youth to engage themselves in farming, although it is not easy but will make it.

Nana Kwame Agyei, Chief of Donkorkrom chaired the occasion and was supported by Nana Kojo Nyarko, Gyaase Hene of Kenyasi No.1, and a lot of Traditional rulers and Queen mothers in the district with their colourful and beautiful kente and African clothes to grace the occasion.
