Tano North farmers awarded

The Tano North Municipal Assembly in the Ahafo Region has awarded local farmers who have worked tirelessly to feed the municipality and the country at large.

The farmers, received the awards during this year’s 37th farmers' Day celebration which was held at Yamfo-Roman Catholic School park- under the theme; “Planting For Food And Jobs-Consolidating Food Systems In Ghana.”

Mr. Stephen Kyeremeh from Terchire was adjudged the overall best farmer.

He received prize items such as wellington boots, cutlasses, key soap, wax print, fertilizers and a large cargo tricycle.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Tano North, Mr Ernest Kwarteng, used the opportunity hail the Akufo-Addo led administration for introducing the Planting for Food and Jobs flagship programme to improve food supply in the country.

According to him, a total of about Two Thousand, Two Hundred and Ninety-Five (2,295) Maize and Rice farmers in the Municipality made up of One Thousand Six Hundred and Fifty-Seven (1,657) Males and Six Hundred and Thirty-Eight (638) Females have been supplied with improved seeds.

The Municipality with the help of the Modernizing Agriculture in Ghana (MAG) programme has also given Six (6) rice harvesters to three rice farmer groups at Adrobaa, Tanokrom and Duayaw Nkwanta.

The government, under the Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD) programme, has supported farmers in the Municipality with Three Thousand (3,000) cashew seedlings and One Thousand (1,000) coconut seedlings.

The MCE further announced that as part of the Government’s railway development agenda, processes for the construction of the proposed Central Spine Railway Line (Kumasi-Paga) to connect Kumasi, Sunyani, Tamale and Paga has commenced and therefore called on communities along the Kumasi-Sunyani Highway to expect engineers and other field workers in their communities to begin stakeholder/community engagements.

The MCE added by assuring the farmers of the government’s support for their activities to feed the country.

On his part, Nana Adu Baah, Yamfo Manhene and President of Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs was the Chairman for the occasion, thanked the farmers for their enormous contribution towards the development of the Municipality, Region and Ghana at large, and pleaded with farmers to eschew bad farming practices that had the tendency to pollute the environment.
