Ketu South NADMO supports 250 flood-affected households

The Ketu South Municipal office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has provided some relief items to flood victims across the municipality.

The food and non-food items which included bags of rice, boxes of cooking oil, mosquito coils, plastic plates, bowls and cups, blankets, boxes of tomato paste and mackerel as well as wellington boots were distributed to about 250 households of the about 1,000 households impacted by the flooding.

Torgbui Alossode Eve Agadzi ll, the Municipal NADMO Coordinator, in an interview said the distribution of the items took place in communities including Aflao Awakorme in the Avoeme West Electoral Area, Dzablikope, Akame Wudome, Akame Kpotame, and Yelibato (in the Akame Electoral Area) as well as Aflao Agblekpui and Apekotoeme.

He said his outfit also visited some schools such as Agbozume AME Zion, Akatsavakpo Basic School, Duta Basic School, Atiwuta Basic School and a health facility at Duta to present the necessary items like liquid soap, tissue paper, and a few other things.

Torgbui Agadzi said the presentation of the items meant to make life a bit comfortable for the affected persons, some of whom were currently homeless and keeping with friends and family started from the onset of the floods some three-four months ago, and “it’s still ongoing.”

He said the disaster management body was hoping to mobilise enough resources to reach out to every affected household to reduce their suffering.

Ms. Faustina Elikplim Korwu, Assembly member for Avoeme West acknowledged the support from NADMO to flood victims in her Electoral Area but asked for more including from corporate Ghana saying, the relief items they got were woefully inadequate.

She said: “We received items twice from NADMO. The first batch included 50 plates, 50 cups, 10 blankets, 10 pieces of dish bowls, a carton of mosquito coil and used clothing (mainly trousers). They recently brought us 15 wellington boots. About 200 people have been affected in my area and these items are not enough.

“We need more support; my people are suffering.”

Mr. Wilfred Dakunya, Assembly member for Akame said NADMO recently gave out a blanket, a bowl, a cup and four mosquito coils each to some 30 victims (households) in addition to 10 wellington boots to 10 others after it some months ago, “sorted 20 people (households) out with 10kg bag of rice and two litres of cooking oil each.”

“Ghana Gas has also donated some items to us through the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Maxwell Lugudor, which were 40 student mattresses, five bags of rice, two bags each of gari and maize, and five packs of mosquito coil. The mattresses went to people rendered homeless and needing to perch with friends and family while the bags of rice went to other victims.

“We still have the two bags each of maize and gari which we intend to distribute to other affected persons on Wednesday... A lot of people are yet to receive anything. We also need more wellington boots for crossing the flood waters which are still here with us and in our homes.”
