Waste segregation; a positive attitude to effective waste management
Everybody who generates waste has a responsibility to make sure that the waste is managed in such a way that it does not cause any nuisance to the society, and in doing so the major way people have done so is to make sure they collect their waste and put it in bins .

It then becomes the responsibility of waste collectors to convey the wastes to a more suitable place preferably the landfill site.
However, though described as waste, there are various uses of the wastes; thus waste in most cases is wealth.

It is at this point that waste segregation becomes very useful and laudable as it makes the various components of the waste, be it metal, rubber, plant, glass among others handy for use.

In Ghana waste management falls directly at the doorsteps of the various metropolitan, municipal, and district Assemblies as it is their duty to ensure their environment is kept clean.

In light of this, the Adentan Municipal Assembly identified attitudinal change in achieving good results and has initiated steps to imbibe in the people the concept of waste segregation starting from schools.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Adentan, Daniel Nii Noi Adumuah in an exclusive interview with Ghanadistricts.com highlighted that a lot of waste is generated and disposed off without recourse to segregation. This, he noted negatively affect the environment.

He said schools within the municipality have been educated on waste segregation, and the Assembly has provided them separate waste bins to easily separate waste in the schools.

The idea, he said is to begin with the children by psyching them and then eventually educate their parents and siblings per the understanding they get from training so that it becomes a normal practice in the municipality.

The MCE said it is important to begin recycle or reuse of some of these wastes to generate income, adding that this attitude will go a long way to reduce the volume of waste that is sent to the landfill sites.

Citing some examples, he noted that paper waste can be processed into egg crates, glass into beads, organic into manure or feed among others.
He added that some of these wastes can actually be used for picture frames among other things that will go a long way to generate wealth for people as a side job or as full time job, indicating that there are several things we can reuse waste that has lost its first significance into something very useful.
