MOFAD engages Inland fishers in Ashanti Region
The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development is currently holding a three day Ministerial Engagement with Inland Fishers in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

The engagement will enable the team access progress at some Aquaculture for Food and Jobs (AFJ) sites and to ascertain progress made at the sites. The team will also Interacts with Fish Processors and Traders.

Speaking on behalf of the sector Minister, the Deputy Executive Director of the Fisheries Commission, Mr. Paul Bannerman said the government has demonstrated its commitment to improving the economic livelihood of fishers thereby drastically reducing rural poverty. And improving living standards among the fisher folks.

This, he said is anchored on the many investments and supports the government has made across social, economic and infrastructural sectors in the marine fishing sector.

AFJ sites to visit will in include Osei Tutu Senior High School, Hatchery for the supply of fingerlings at Kona Odumasi and a private grow-out fingerlings facility also at Kona Odumasi.

With regards to fisheries infrastructure improvement, he said the sector witnessed;
a. The expansion of the Elmina Fishing Harbour which the President cuts the sod yesterday
b. The construction of 6 landing sites in the Western and Central Regions
c. The construction of the Jamestown Fishing Harbour Complex to be completed in 2 years
d. Anomabo Fisheries College (on-going)
e. Anloga Landing site (completed).

Some Economic Supports also include the
• Provision of 1,300 outboard motors at subsidized prices to boost the operations of Marine Fishers (more outboard motors will be given to fishers in due course);
• Efficient and regular supply of Premix Fuel to the various landing sites; and
• Provision of over 250 improved fish smoking ovens (Ahotor Ovens) to organized women groups within coastal communities, and trained over a thousand women on its use. “Today, we are giving 15 Deep Freezers and some quantities of basins to our esteemed fish processors to support their businesses”.



There has also been Enhanced Fishers Co-Management Structure in which the government provides and collaborates for
(1) National policy direction and economic support;
(2) Regulatory Institutions (for enforcing laws and regulations)
(3) Fishers and Industry players (for collaboration and support)

He thus called for continuous dialogue between policymakers, regulators and fishers to arrive at the most feasible options available for managing fisheries in a sustainable manner in Ghana.

And assured that the government is ready to promote and support the establishment of functional Co-Management Systems in every fishing community in Ghana.

Meanwhile, there would be a visit to some AFJ sites including Osei Tutu Senior High School, Hatchery for the supply of fingerlings at Kona Odumasi; and a private grow-out fingerlings facility also at Kona Odumasi.
