President cuts sod for Koforidua-Nsukwao Basin Drainage
His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo on Tuesday, August 4, 2020 cut the sod for the construction of Nsukwao Basin Drainage Improvement Project for the chiefs and people of New Juaben South Municipality.

This project is basically aimed at ending the prevailing flooding in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital.

The project funded by the World Bank, under the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Programme (GSCSP), which was launched on May 7, 2019, in Koforidua, been initiated to curb urban development management and service delivery.

The President in his speech commended the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama, and all stakeholders who contributed immensely in making the project possible, adding that the project will go a long way to improve the livelihood of Koforidua and beyond.

He continued by saying four (4) Municipalities being; Lower Manya Krobo, Birim Central, Abuakwa South and New Juaben South Municipalities, respectfully in the Eastern Region were been identified and currently benefiting from these secondary City Projects.



“My government is poised to provide everything that matters to the local people in communities so that they will also benefit from the national cake” Nana Akufo-Addo also said.

He further urged the contractors for the project to ensure that quality work is delivered and must meet the stipulated time.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Eric Kwakye Darfour thanked the President of the Republic and the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development Minister, Hajia Alima Mahama for considering New Juaben Municipality in the construction of the Nsukwao Basin Drainage system, which will help curb the flooding problem being encountered by the various communities during heavy rainfalls.

The Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama, also an MP for Nalerigu – Gambaga constituency said, “the Project will deliver a storm drain that will minimize flooding in the identified communities at the cost of GH¢15,811,145.00, with additional GH¢800.000.00 for design and supervision and GH¢160,000.00 to the Assembly for effective monitoring”.



She accordingly said, “The project which has been packaged into seven (7) lots was geared toward the government’s commitment to deliver the projects on time and it is expected to be completed within the next six (6) months”.

Hajia Alima Mahama explicitly said the second project for the development of Koforidua Jackson Park will start after the completion of the Nsukwao Basin Drainage Improvement project.

The Chief Executive Officer for Free Zones Board, Hon. Michael Okyere, doubled as the Parliamentary Candidate for New Juaben South Constituency thanked the President for his unflinching support for the chiefs and people of New Juaben South Municipality.

Present at the sod-cutting ceremony were; Representative from the Omanhene of the New Juaben Traditional Area, Nana Twumasi Dankwa (Gyaasehene), Nana Anima (Santaa Hemaa), Nana Obugya Asante (Sumuna hene), Nana Baafour Opoku (Nkonwasua hene).
